Getting Social at Bright’s Creek

With Cathy Brovet, Director of Member Services

Community is at the heart of everything we do here at beautiful Bright’s Creek. From engaging rounds of golf on our stunning Tom Fazio-designed course to our lifestyle center featuring multi-generational entertainment and amenities, bringing people together for life’s most memorable moments is what we do best.

This month, we had the pleasure of speaking with Bright’s Creek’s Director of Member Services, Cathy Brovet, to learn all about the exciting social events and enrichment opportunities that are brewing at Bright’s. Discover what’s on the horizon and see how your family can play, learn, and grow right here in your very own North Carolina mountain paradise.

Cathy, tell us a little bit about yourself and what you do here at Bright’s Creek.

I’ve been lucky enough to be in leadership at multiple clubs throughout my career and have always had a passion for building relationships with people. From small startup communities to established developments, I’ve been a part of them all and love the unique activities, demographics, and experiences they each bring—but there’s something so special about life here at Bright’s Creek. I really enjoy managing lodging and member services in such an intimate atmosphere. In my role, I have the unique opportunity to introduce people to outdoor living in North Carolina, as well as act as a bridge that helps connect people in our community to one another. From planning social events and new enrichment series, I do it all with the support of our amazing members and staff.

What do you think makes Bright’s Creek so unique?

The second you come here, you fall in love with Bright’s Creek. Visually, it’s just breathtaking and there’s a vibrant energy everywhere you turn. We feel tucked away in our own little North Carolina mountain oasis, but there’s so much to do and see—both inside and outside of our gates. From the bustling Tryon Fine Arts Center to theaters, galleries, and educational opportunities, there are so many things to do in North Carolina. You can truly support local here!

Beyond the beauty and abundance of unique activities, I think our members here really set our community apart from the rest. We have a small, personal feel that offers privacy when you want it and connection when you crave it. Everyone here is passionate and we’ve all worked together to shape Bright’s Creek into something special!

Bright’s Creek has a summer packed with an array of amazing activities! Tell us what members can look forward to and share some insights into your planning process.

Yes, we’re really looking forward to what’s on the horizon for the rest of the year! We make it easy for Bright’s Creek members to stay connected and up to date on all the latest happenings on the club calendar on Clubster. From really unique fireside chats all about nature to luncheons, sporting events, pool parties, wine dinners, mixers, golf events, live music, cooking classes, bowling leagues, and even a kids’ camp, we have something for everyone! It’s also very important to me to educate our members and offer them meaningful resources beyond entertainment. Later this year, we’ll be introducing members to the Polk County hospital system so that everyone knows about the important resources that are within easy reach here at Bright’s.

I begin planning for the busy social season months in advance so that we can offer our members a really thoughtful, exciting array of curated experiences. We aim to host at least one or two events during the peak summer season. Planning involves researching local events, artists, workshops, and educational activities. I love chatting with members to hear about what they’d like to learn or experience as well. We’re surrounded by an abundance of talent and so many unique backgrounds here at Bright’s Creek, so it’s incredible to tap into our local resources and neighbors, too.

Our activities and events are in a blossoming phase where anything and everything is possible! We’re making our own rules and creating programs that appeal to members versus relying on agendas that have been in rooted place for years without being nimble. My love for enrichment is a thread you’ll find throughout our programming. We hosted a morel mushroom hunt last year, which has flourished into so many more nature-inspired learnings and experiences. People don’t know they have a passion for something until you spark it!

5 Thrilling ways you can enjoy the outdoors in Polk County, NC

allen tate logo
We’d like thank our partners at Allen Tate Beverly-Hanks for this insightful write-up on our home here in Polk County.

Touted as the “First Peak of the Blue Ridge,” Polk County has long welcomed flatlanders to a higher altitude. Since the turn of the 20th century, Polk County’s towns of Columbus, Saluda, and Tryon have been favorite mountain destinations to escape the sweltering summer heat of more urban and southern locales. Today, the area is an internationally renowned stopping point for outdoor enthusiasts and equestrian professionals.

The elevation of Polk County ranges from just under 800 feet near the confluence of the Green River and Broad River to over 3,200 feet on Tryon Peak and Wildcat Spur. Numerous city parks, walking tours, hiking, road biking, swimming, fishing, camping, zip-lining, and whitewater adventures are within easy reach. That gives locals plenty of opportunities to engage with the vast natural areas around them.

If you’re ready for a thrill, this is the destination you seek! Here are five ways to enjoy the outdoors in Polk County, NC.

Saddle up in horse country

Tryon has been one of the South’s top equestrian destinations for more than 100 years. Today, the town offers world-class equine veterinary, boarding, and training facilities, as well as more than 100 miles of private trail systems. The town is known for its Foothills Equestrian Nature Center (FENCE), a 390-acre educational and recreational center that provides programs in nature study, outdoor recreation, and equestrian competition.

Tryon has also quickly hit the international scene because of the $100 million, 1,450-acre Tryon International Equestrian Center. Opened in 2014, TIEC takes a love for horses to the next level. The facility features 10 riding arenas, over 1,000 permanent stalls, elevated and shaded viewing decks, restaurants, family activities, boutiques, and more. It’s no wonder the location was chosen as the host of the 2018 World Equine Games.

Hit the trails

mountain hiking is one of the popular things to do in Black Mountain, NC

Every day in the Blue Ridge Mountains is an adventure, especially if you know where to look. And luckily, in Polk County, you can look in nearly any direction outdoors and find great trails for hiking, biking, camping, and exploring with friends and family—even with your dog!

One short but exquisitely beautiful trailhead adventure leads you to Pearson’s Falls. You’ll see plants of remarkable diversity on the quarter-mile trail, including over 300 varieties of ferns, flowering plants, algae, and mosses. Pearson’s Falls and Glen is also a wildlife and bird sanctuary maintained by The Tryon Garden Club. Bradley Nature Preserve, Saluda Nature Park, and Pulliam Creek Trail are also great places to discover the beauty of nature, as well as great views.

Have a whitewater adventure

Polk County’s range of elevations make it the perfect place to explore local rivers. People of all ages enjoy fishing, paddle sports, and just quietly admiring life along the banks. Throughout the summer, it’s common to see streams of tubers floating lazily down the gentle rapids of the Lower Green River.

But if you’re looking for a thrill, one water sport tops them all: whitewater rafting. Sections of the Green River offer some of the finest and most challenging kayaking in the Southeast and beyond. Founded in 1997, the Green River Narrows Race has been called the “rowdiest kayak race in America.” Competitors face Class V rapids and a narrow 18-foot drop (called the Gorilla) along the ¾-mile-long course. In addition to the main event, the competition is used to promote river conservation, raising funds for local conservation nonprofits.

Zip across the treetops

Photo from The Gorge Zipline

Polk County offers countless ways to explore the great outdoors. One of the most awe inspiring and adrenaline inducing is zip-lining, traveling down a cable wire over an open span as fast as gravity can propel you. Aerialists as young as four years old can travel from treetop to treetop, exploring protected forests from above.

The Gorge is America’s steepest and fastest zip line canopy tour. You begin your experience perched on the rim of the Green River Gorge, and then plunge into untouched wilderness. The ride descends an unprecedented 1,100 feet in elevation, zipping from treetop to treetop on 11 zip lines. Meanwhile, you also get to traverse a sky bridge and descend three huge rappels, all taking you through stunning old-growth forest overlooking 18,000 acres of protected gamelands.

Take a stroll around town

the main street of quaint storefronts in Saluda, NC

Trips into Polk County must include a leisurely stroll among the tree-lined streets of historic Saluda. There are numerous easily accessible city parks around town. But the main attractions are the many distinctive shops, art and craft galleries, and delicious restaurants along Main Street. Don’t miss the two century-old general stores. While you’re there, get a whiff of glossy oil-stained, heart pine floors stirring up memories of times gone by.

Saluda also hosts a variety of annual events and outdoor festivals. The Saluda Arts Festival, held in May, attracts fine artists from across WNC and South Carolina to showcase their art and offer live demos. The popular Coon Dog Day Festival, held the first Saturday after July 4th, is a celebratory event with food, live music, a parade, and a street dance.

Find what feels like home in Polk County, NC

Polk County is quickly growing! People are moving to the area to enjoy all the wonderful cultural and natural amenities the area has to offer. Bright’s Creek Golf Course: Insider Secrets with Head Golf Pro, Mark Ernst

Our Head Golf Pro and PGA Professional Mark Ernst now has an exciting debut season with Bright’s Creek under his belt. We welcomed him to our mountain oasis last spring and what a joy it’s been having his exceptional leadership, clear vision, and 30+ years of golf expertise helping us to forge a bright future.

We recently had the chance to chat with Mark about our Tom Fazio-designed golf course, what’s in store for members this year, and even some pro secrets you definitely won’t want to miss.

Mark, you just wrapped up your first season at Bright’s Creek. What surprised you and what did you learn?

Yes and what an exceptional experience it’s been so far! I had the pleasure of meeting with our members throughout the season and I’m just so impressed. It’s truly inspiring to hear the passion in people’s voices when they talk about not only their love of golf, but also life here at Bright’s Creek. There’s a camaraderie and connection that’s palpable here. We’re lucky to get to enjoy such a beautiful property every day! Best of all, our new amenities at The Mill really enhance the overall experience and lifestyle here at Bright’s—and pair perfectly with golf, of course.

Tell us a little bit about what you have planned for the 2024 season. What can members and prospects get excited about?

Well, we’ve got a really exciting year ahead. Our team is currently finalizing plans for our Bright’s Creek signature events, which will be a big draw for our members and their guests. We’re also thinking a lot about how we can enhance the playability of the Bright’s Creek golf course while continuing to maintain the integrity of its original design. Our course was designed by the legendary golf course architect Mr. Tom Fazio and we actually just met with his son and Director of Business Development, Austin, to discuss some upcoming projects and exciting enhancements to our course while maintaining Mr. Fazio’s original vision.

In fact, we learned something really interesting! Our tree canopy grows about one foot per year, which creates a tighter playing window in some areas of the course. Finding ways to enhance the unique beauty of our course while trimming back some of the trees will get us back to the original design and intent of the course.

What are some behind-the-scenes fun facts about the Bright’s Creek golf course that most people wouldn’t know about?

We had a fantastic 2023 and experienced some really positive momentum! We saw an incredible 50% participation increase in our signature Member-Guest, The Creek Cup. Rounds of play were also up almost 20% last year.

We’re seeing some exciting interest in our golf program, not to mention more than fifteen homes under construction in our community this coming year! I can’t wait to be in the middle of it all and work with our leadership team and community members to create our best year yet.

What do you think makes the Bright’s Creek course so special?

I believe that Tom Fazio himself has even called this course one of his favorites in North Carolina so that alone is pretty spectacular. But I would say that the putting green complexes really fit the shot you’re going to play. You can see the unique contours of the green, which informs how to play each hole. Some holes even have multiple greens within a green, while longer holes are a little less contoured. We’re lucky to be able to enjoy such an interesting and thoughtfully designed course. It’s challenging yet welcoming for all player levels. Of course, our surrounding views of the Western North Carolina mountains are truly breathtaking and make a round just that much more special.

Tell us about what you think would draw new members to join the Bright’s Creek community.

There’s something for everyone here at Bright’s. It’s not just about golf, although our course and program are truly spectacular. Our new Lifestyle center The Mill recently opened, which features a state-of-the-art fitness center, a heated swimming pool, a two-lane bowling alley, and so much more. Plus, our on-site Equestrian Center is unmatched and celebrates the area’s rich equestrian culture. Not to mention our vast network of hiking trails, plus incredible views everywhere you turn. What’s not to love about life at Bright’s Creek?

Can you leave us with any pro insider tips or secrets for playing the Bright’s Creek golf course?

I would say, no matter what your eyes are telling you, always take one more club than you think on an uphill! Some holes don’t look as sloped as they actually are and I’m here to tell you it’s definitely uphill. That would be my insider advice for enjoying a great round with us!

Are you ready to experience your best life yet at Bright’s Creek? Come play a round of golf, explore our exceptional amenities, and see what awaits in our charming Mill Spring mountain community.

Combine that with the people that choose to make this place home, and you can really see what makes this place special.”

Bright’s Creek Homeowners: Voices of Experience

Don’t take our word for it. We chatted with some of Bright’s Creek homeowners to hear more about their custom home-building process and learned why they fell in love with our mountain community.

The house is nearing completion and we have had no serious delays or major glitches. Our wonderful on-site manager regularly sends pictures and progress updates. The communication has been excellent. What more could you ask for?” – Denise Schubert and Randy Miller

“We felt very comfortable the moment we arrived. We knew Bright’s Creek was home as soon as we saw it. It has everything we were looking for in a second home. Great golf course, spectacular views. All About the Equestrian Country

Did you know that our beautiful North Carolina ranks as one of the top 10 equine states in the country? Bright’s Creek celebrates equestrian culture and community with a state-of-the-art Equestrian Center right here within the gates of our Mill Spring, NC, mountain oasis. The Bright’s Creek Equestrian Center is an incredible resource to have for horse lovers. While it’s not part of the Bright’s Creek Club Membership, it’s an incredible amenity for property owners. Just another reason why, Bright’s Creek is truly unmatched.

Bright’s Creek Real Estate Agent Heather Chambers

This month, we had the chance to chat with Heather Chambers, one of Bright’s Creek’s expert on-site real estate agents — who also happens to be an equestrian extraordinaire. Her passion and leadership were driving forces behind breathing new life into the Equestrian Center.

Here’s what Heather had to say about it — and why if you love horses (and even if you don’t), you should book a Discovery Stay to experience our mountain community in person.

Heather, tell us about your role here at Bright’s Creek.

I’m one of the on-site Real Estate Brokers here at Bright’s Creek. I have a long history with the community and have always been an advocate for Bright’s Creek! I always thought that the Equestrian Center was a really important aspect in setting our community apart from the rest. A horse lover myself, I had the privilege of re-opening the Equestrian Center back in 2021.

What makes your location such a special place for equestrians?

We’re in an absolutely gorgeous location right in the valley surrounded by breathtaking mountain views. The topography alone is incredible. Our North Carolina Equestrian Center features about 2.5 miles of wide, shaded trails. It’s actually one of the first things you see when you drive through our gates — seeing horses grazing really sets the tone.

Our location is also close to equine destinations like the Tryon International Equestrian Center, which is very convenient for boarders and other equestrians.

What are some of the perks and programs of the Equestrian Center that make it especially appealing?

We offer a lot of unique features that really set our center apart. Being safely gated with 24-hour security is of course a huge benefit! Our barn is a beautiful timber framed 11-stall barn. We offer a large bright gathering room for riders and guests that looks out onto our arena and paddocks. Our riding trails offer wide, flat shaded trails that meander the ridge line above the Equestrian Center. We also have an impressive outdoor arena that’s 200’ x 160’. It features jumps, new footing, and is surrounded by amazing mountain views.

We also offer group, adult, and child lessons (age 8+) by a professional trainer. Kids also love our arena pony rides, which are like fun mini lessons. We also offer on site partial leases of one of our house horses; take your pick of River, Sterling or Charlie! This gives a rider an introduction to horse ownership without the full commitment.

Bright’s Creek is also home to some really unique equestrian events. We host equestrian clinics that might include riding and instruction, yoga, even painting. We offer summer camps for kids as well as adults. Guests love our seasonal events like Boo at the Barn, where kids can trick or treat at the stalls. As we grow, we’ll continue to expand our camp and clinic offerings as well.

Something really special that we host here is called Guiding Reins, which is an equine-assisted wellness program for veterans, active-duty personnel, first responders, and their families.

Bright’s Creek is the go-to facility for Polk County. We host an annual fall BBQ fundraiser and silent auction benefiting the Guiding Reins program. Our on-site trainer has been trained in the program and it’s near and dear to our hearts here at Bright’s Creek.

Tell us more about the boarding options you offer.

We have an array of boarding options fit for the different needs of our community.

Our Full Board service is our most comprehensive option. It includes a stall in our main barn, an assigned storage area in our renovated tack room, feed and hay, blanketing, showering, medication administering — really anything your horse needs. Trailer parking/storage is also available to our boarders.

We also offer a Self-Care Board, where a horse owner manages the needs of their horse while enjoying use of all of our top-notch equestrian amenities. They’ll also get a stall in our secondary barn as well as trailer parking.

Finally, with our Pasture Board option, your horse spends time in our peaceful pasture and we provide all feed and hay.

If we have the space, guests in the area can also ask about our transient boarding service. Of course, borders have 24/7 access to our facility as well.

Equestrian culture is popular in the area. Tell us about some of the local resources.

The Tryon International Equestrian Center is just about 20 minutes away and is really a global destination. They host shows and competitions, a spring steeplechase, and more. FENCE, or the Foothills Equestrian Nature Center, offers a therapeutic riding program, year-round events, and hundreds of acres to explore on horseback.

There are also a number of popular tack shops in the area — so if you’re a passionate equestrian or just starting to explore the sport, we have so many resources within reach of Bright’s Creek.
