Bright’s Creek February 2023 Newsletter

General Manager’s Message

We are getting closer to starting to gradually open our new Amenity Center. Our technology provider is on-site this week working on the internet and entertainment systems. The Amenity Center will have strong internet service and multiple televisions with coordinated sound. Over the next 30 to 45 days, we anticipate delivering and installing our kitchen equipment, fitness equipment, technology and furniture. Stay tuned for details and information as we get closer to opening day.

Our course maintenance team continues their off-season work, including applications to control winter weeds. Consistent warmer weather is important for these treatments to be effective.

Please take extra caution when out on the course. Filling divots and taking care of where to drive your cart will aid in the course conditions coming out of the winter.

Our custom Bright’s Creek tee markers are made from sourwood trees harvested from the golf course’s property. Sourwood logs are harvested and cut up into medallions that are about two inches or more in thickness and four to six inches in diameter. The medallions are stored indoors and allowed to dry for a few weeks. Once the medallions have fully dried, we heat up our branding irons in a fire pit. The branding irons are heated until they become red hot and then are removed from the fire and placed onto the sourwood medallions. It only takes a few seconds for the brand to burn into the wood. After branding, the markers will have metal spikes installed and then two coats of spar urethane will be applied to protect the wood from the elements.

In January we released the first edition of the Bright’s Creek “Book of Golf”. This book contains valuable information about the 2023 golf season and will hopefully provide some insight into the club’s event and tournament schedule. You can access the link in this month’s newsletter.

Bright’s Creek is located in the foothills region of Western North Carolina, an area of North Carolina rich in history and places of interest. Did you know that the Saluda Grade is minutes from Mill Spring and the location of the steepest standard-gauge mainline railway grade in the United States. While taken out of service by Norfolk Southern in late 2001, you can still hike the trails and test yourself on the nearly 5% grade.

Regards and thank you for your continued support of the club.

Reality versus expectation is something to review and acknowledge.

PGA Tour 2022 putting stats via pgatour.com

Inside 5 feet- 96.83% best player was 98.61%

5-10 feet- 56.29% best player was 68.59%

10-15 feet- 30.13% best player was 42.86%

15-20 feet- 18.53% best player was 28.81%

These are the BEST players in the world that practice uncountable hours to perfect their craft.

Moral of the story…curb expectations and change practice habits on the green. practice 3-5 footers more than any other putt. When moving outside 10-15 feet your SPEED needs to be the main focus as even if you misread putt by 3 feet, but speed is good, you’re inside that circle of a HIGH percentage chance for making putts. The inside 5 feet to 5-10 foot drop off percentage is a fantastic statistic to acknowledge.

The Book of Golf is available via the link here and on the website.
